What is Zonta?

The Zonta Club of Guildford is a member of Zonta International

The name Zonta is a Sioux Indian word which signifies “honest and trustworthy”. Founded in 1919 in Buffalo, USA, it is now a global organisation with consultative status with the United Nations. Individual clubs across the world select, fund and participate in community projects that address issues such as women’s economic self sufficiency, legal equity, access to education and healthcare, and eradication of violence

Mission

Zonta International is a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy

Vision

Zonta International envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognised as human right and every woman is able to achieve her full potential.In such a world, women have access to all resourced and are represented in decision making positions on an equal basis with men. In such a world, no woman lives in fear of violence

 

Zontians are executives and professionals who:

  • work to improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women through community and international service
  • encourage women to advance in their careers and excel in all their endeavours
  • share friendship and fellowship through a local and global network of business people and professionals engaged in a variety of occupations
  • further a legacy of women’s rights and progress that began in 1919

Zonta International:

  • works to advance opportunities for all women as an accredited non-governmental organisation (“NGO”) in the United Nations system
  • maintains consultative status with various UN agencies, and participated officially in all four UN World Conferences on Women
  • works with the Conference of International Non-Governmental Organisations of the Council of Europe, which groups some 400 International Non-Governmental Organisations

 

ADVOCACY

Zonta International has engaged in advocacy at the international level through its international service projects and its awards programs which promote the status of women

At the local level, the Zonta Club of Guildford is a member of the UK NGO CSW Alliance, an alliance of ca 100 women organisation in the UK who work together with the UK Government through a core group to form strategy for and engage in the yearly sessions of the UN Commission on the status of women (CSW)

The CSW was established as a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 1946 to prepare recommendations and reports to the Council on promoting women’s rights in political, economic, civil, social and educational fields

INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND STRUCTURE

Zonta International is composed of more than 1,200 Zonta clubs in 67 countries and geographic areas worldwide. With more than 30,000 members, Zontians from all over the globe are fulfilling Zonta’s mission to advance the status of women worldwide. Zonta International is led by its International Board of Directors and Committee Chairs. It is further divided into 32 geographical Districts which in turn have Areas. The Zonta Club of Guildford belongs to Area 3 (UK) in District 29
